MATILDA
Author: Roald Dahl Published in: 1988 Main Characters: Matilda, Miss Honey, Miss Trunchball, Lavender |
Synopsis: This story is about a young girl named Matilda. You might just think
of her as an ordinary girl, but in reality, she is an extremely smart girl
for her age. She was able to read at the age of 3! Now, you would expect her
parents to be very proud of her, wouldn’t you? Unfortunately for Matilda,
however, her parents sometimes forget that she was ever alive. Matilda has a
brother, Michael, and her parents think very highly of him. Matilda is used to being treated like this, but deep inside all she
ever wanted is for someone to love her and praise her for her talents. Harry
(Matilda’s father) is a second-hand car salesman, who enjoys swindling his
customers. Zinnia (Matilda’s mother) prefers to play bingo all day and gamble
with her money. As Michael goes to school, this usually means that Matilda is
left alone at home. Matilda learnt many things as a result of this, including
going to the library all by herself! When Matilda was around 6 years old, her parents finally realised
that she had to start school soon. They decided the worst school possible,
called Crunchem Hall Elementary School. Matilda was most excited about
meeting other kids her age and learning new things, but as soon as she saw
her school, something didn’t feel right. It looked like a dark, gloomy place,
a place that no child would ever want to go to. The headmistress, Miss
Trunchball, clearly hated children and enjoyed the sound of them being upset.
She showed particular hatred towards Matilda, and kept an annoyingly close
watch on her. On the other hand, Matilda’s teacher, Miss Honey, was a kind, loving
woman who cared for each and every one of her students. She showed particular interest in Matilda,
and seemed very surprised and pleased after Matilda mastered in all her subjects
and came top in her class. It wasn’t long till Miss Honey had a favourite
student J Matilda tried informing her parents about the Trunchball situation,
but they didn’t seem to believe her. No one seemed to believe any of the
children. Matilda and her best friend Lavender had to survive throughout this journey and
find out what Trunchball was up to. Later on in the book, Matilda realised the awful truth. Miss Honey looked
like a loving person on the outside, but in reality, her past was horrible.
And Miss Trunchball had something to do with it. What happened? Will Matilda be able to find out? Read this old favourite by Roald Dahl to find out! |
Why I like this book: This Book tells a fascinating story about a girl
who stands up for herself even in troubled times. Matilda can teach us how
she overcame her fears and helped others to overcome THEIR fears. Even if this
may be a fictional story, the moral of this story is to keep being determined
even if you think you would fail. I really enjoyed reading this as well as
watching the movie! |
