Synopsis:

This story started with a young boy called Alfie. He was famous for having the most horrid teeth! He hated going to the dentist, and, as a result, the boy’s teeth were almost all yellow.  The ones that weren’t yellow, well, they were brown. The teeth that were neither yellow nor brown simply weren’t there anymore. They had fallen out! Alfie lived with his disabled father as his mother had died after giving birth to him. After a traumatising experience in the dentist’s surgery a few years ago, Alfie had vowed that he would not go to the dentist ever again.  Never. Never ever. Hopefully his Father never found the letters from the dentist at the top of the cupboard…

When Alfie had gone back to school, the headmaster, Mr Grey, announced that the town’s new dentist was arriving in the school to teach pupils about healthy teeth. Nothing interesting ever happened in Alfie’s school, and they obviously thought that this wasn’t going to be any better than any other visits.

Miss Root was this peculiar dentist in town. Now, the first thing you would notice about Miss Root was her dazzling, pearl white teeth. Whiter than White. Like a florescent light. So white that they couldn’t even be real. Miss Root was also extremely tall, it was like someone walking on stilts!

Alfie knew that there was something eerie about this woman. For the first time, he noticed Miss Root’s dark black eyes. Blacker than Black. As dark as coal. ‘Now, who hates going to the dentist?’ she had asked, in the sweetest tone. Alfie’s hand shot up like a rocket. ‘Who hasn’t gone to the dentist in a while?’ she questioned, in that same childish tone. Alfie’s hand shot up again. He really was the king of not going to the dentist.

After embarrassing Alfie by checking his teeth in front of the school, Miss Root had handed him a toothpaste, called ‘MUMMY’S TOOTHPASTE.’ Wasn’t this rather strange? What’s more strange, is that Miss Root started handing out SWEETS to the students! Weren’t dentists supposed to keep their patients’ teeth clean?  No one saw this as a strange matter of course, except from Alfie and his friend Gabriella…

Darkness had come to the Town. Odd things were happening in the dead of night. Children would put a tooth under their pillow for the tooth fairy, and would wake up to find a dead slug, a bat’s wing (still flapping), a live spider, and we can’t forget the hundreds of earwigs creeping and crawling on their pillow. Evil was at work, and it was up to Alfie and Gabriella to find out who was behind this.

Who was behind this? What happened to Alfie’s hate for dentists? Where did Miss Root go? Read this book to find out!

Why I like this book:

I enjoyed reading this story because it was comic, a bit spooky and totally unbelievable! The made-up word alerts were funny too. I wasn't so keen on the sadder parts but they did make it a little more realistic. It certainly made me less keen on going to the dentist! I think that you should give this book a try if you enjoy David Walliam’s books. Why don’t you go and read my other reviews about his books if you haven’t already?
